Antarctica

Shaped by Gabriel's firsthand experience in Antarctica, this collection explores a landscape of extraordinary beauty and unforgiving extremes. Through light, texture and atmosphere, his paintings examine the fragile boundary between survival and silence, memory and the immense power of nature.

Memory of Cold Survival

Memory of Cold Survival draws on Gabriel's experience in Antarctica during the ANARE 68 (2014 - 2015) expedition, including survival training at Casey Station. Through layers of oil and modelling paste, the work evokes the physical resistance of ice, wind and snow, and the vulnerability of the human figure within the immense Antarctic landscape. The textured surface is integral to the work: light catches the raised paint differently across the canvas, allowing the landscape to shift between solidity and near disappearance.

Magnetic Symphony - Above Casey

Above Casey Station, the Antarctic night becomes a symphony of magnetic forces and light. Curtains of magenta, emerald and electric blue sweep across the darkness, converging, separating and unfolding in a celestial performance. Below, the frozen landscape rests in silence, illuminated by colours that seem almost impossible.

A silent landscape beneath a sky in motion.

Bones of Silence

Deep within the Antarctic ice, silence is never absolute.

During his time in Antarctica, Gabriel experienced the haunting acoustics of a glacier - water dripping through hidden cavities, echoes travelling beneath the frozen surface, and the unsettling sound of ice cracking from within.

In Bones of Silence, the glacier reveals its ancient, almost skeletal architecture - a world of fractured ice, luminous depths and hidden movement.

Because even silence has a structure. And sometimes, you can hear its bones cracking.
